About the Artwork Weaving, easy to hang with the driftwood stick provided. Materials: Recycled textiles, wood, monofilament A weaving, done with a “toothbrush” needle and hung with monofilament from a piece of driftwood. This piece has a depth of meaning for me as an avid recycler and lover of nature, the ocean in this instance. The watercolor tones evoke the colors seen in the rippling waters of the Atlantic shores I have visited on two continents. The transition of colors and the driftwood bring a sense of peace and harmony to the viewer. The use of recycled textiles, gathered from family and friends, the scavenged piece of driftwood, and the monofilament picked up on a beach add the second layer of meaning to this work. If everyone made the effort to re-use, recycle or pass on usable items, what a sustainable ripple effect there would be in promoting the health of our planet! The material I could not use was passed further on in the recycling chain.

I started doing needlework at a young age. I moved from one technique to another, branching out into other forms of creative artistry. I grew up in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State, surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, colors and forms. There was a communal mindset of conservation, preservation, and protection, creating a burgeoning ecological awareness in all who lived there. I now live in Florida, where the landscape is different, but the need to preserve and protect remain just as, or even more, relevant. Travelling the world, experiencing different cultures and environments, I take inspiration from where I have been and the feelings these places evoke. I use remnants or recycled textiles and media whenever possible in my work. It connects me to the places I have been and the life I wish others would live. The creative process is multi-level for me. When I get an idea for a piece, I cannot rest until I have gathered my materials and mapped out a design. The first attempts are not always successful, but I continue with the ideas until I find the right textiles and media for their expression. Then the process becomes more of a joyful journey, fitting and re-fitting the pieces, changing color combinations, until no further adjustments are needed. A sense of peace and rightness prevails as the work gets closer to completion.
